A number of factors effect the condition of your skin - your daily habits, the climate, for example, exposure to UV rays, your DNA, and the products you use, amongst other things. There are thousands of products out there to choose from in the marketplace, and tons of advice on how to best look after your skin and make the best of it. Your skin will change with age, as will the products you choose, and each of us has our own individual requirements. So here's what you should bare in mind when choosing your own personal skincare regime.
There are four main steps which need to be included (serum not essential, but beneficial):
You should carry out your routine twice daily - once in the morning and once in the evening. Throughout the day your skin will be in contact with dirt, pollutants and other factors which need to be removed. Throughout the night your skin will be rejuvinating - the blood flow increases, collagen is rebuilt, and UV damage is repaired, reducing wrinkles and age spots. Washing in the morning is then necessary to remove any impurities accumulated overnight, and to prepare the skin for better absorption of products in your morning regime and application of cosmetics.
A good cleanser will cleanse your skin without stripping essential, healthy oils. Different types of skin require different formulas of cleanser. (We will look into that in future blogs.) If you use an exfoliating scrub, stick to once a week and choose a quality product that doesn't contain harsh abrasive ingredients, such as walnet shells. A good eye make-up remover is also advisable for removing the make-up around your eyes as these are designed to pull away the make-up product from the skin. They are not cleansers, however, so you will need to use a cleanser for the whole face too.
Originally alcohol based, the toner was aimed at removing the last traces of dirt after cleansing and to dry up oily skin. We have moved on from this idea, and your toner is now seen as a supplement delivering extra ingredients and nutients, helping other products to absorb, and balancing your complexion.
Here are some other ingredients to look out for:
- AHAs and BHAs
- Hyaluronic acid
- Rose water and green tea
- Vitamin E and C
Apply your toner after cleansing and before your serum (if you are using a serum).
Powerful allies to your skincare regime and filled with potent doses of concentrated active ingredients. They each have their own specific powers to treat your individual needs. Even if you don't reckon you need a serum, it is always a good idea to use an anti-oxident based serum to combat everyday stress and free radicals in the environment that age your skin.
Trolley Molly has some favourites:
- Hyaluronic acid
- Vitamin C
Apply your serum before your moisturiser. If you are using various serums for different concerns, then make sure you read up on what to apply when and with what.
We all need a moisturiser, even our men! The various texture will depend on your type of skin. (We will look into that in future blogs.)
Then we have daytime and nighttime moisturisers, as well as specific eye creams.
Daytime: Normally a lighter texture of cream and often with antioxidents and sunscreen.
Nighttime: These creams will be thicker in texture and are designed to replenish moisture levels in the skin and repair any damage overnight. Often with extra ingredients such as retinol to speed cellular turnover and counteract dark spots.
Eye creams: The skin around your eyes is thinner and more delicate than the rest of your face and therefore more likely to react to irritating ingredients in your facial moisturiser. So eye creams will contain more tolerable levels of ingredients to take into account that sensitivity. Trolley Molly supplies you with a number of creams specifically for the eye area and containing some amazing ingredients.
If you are using face masks then apply them after your serum and before your moisturiser. A night time face mask will replace your nighttime moisturiser. Stick to once a week with these products.
If you are using a facial oil then apply after your serum and before your moisturiser. Facial oils can be used daily, morning and night.
So there you have it! That's your basic skincare regime in a nutshell. It's well worth experimenting with products to see which are your favourites. Give them time to take effect and enjoy your skincare regime.
It's all about looking good and feeling good. So spoil yourself!
