So what power does the gemstone amethyst possess? And when and where does it come from?
The earliest use of this gorgeous violet-purple variety of quartz dates back to ancient Greece where one legend tells us that the Greek god Dionysus created the Amethyst. The crystal received its name from the Greek word “amethystos”, or not drunken, and so is a reference to the belief that this stone protects its owner from drunkenness - so if you like a tipple!! ;)
It is also known that medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle, believing that the stone has the power to heal people and keep them cool-headed.
In the 1600s, amethyst was given to a Spanish conquistador as dowry when he married Anahí (a princess from the Ayoreo tribe). And then, for three centuries, the stone was forgotten and rediscovered in the 1960s!
High quality amethyst can be found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Uruguay, and the far East. The crystals are found in quartz veins in a granitic rock of the well known Bushveld intrusion complex. We know that this host rock is approximately 2 billion years old, but we aren't yet sure when the quartz veins were formed and so how old the crystals actually are.
There is a spiritual connotation to amethyst. The stone is often compared with Christ, with its deep purple colour symbolising the agony of Christ in the crucifixion. The Hebrew word for amethyst is "ahlamah", which translates to "dream stone" and so the Jews believed that the gem caused powerful dreams.
Amethyst ranges in hue from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple colour, and it may exhibit one or both secondary hues of red and blue. In general, the darker the hue, the more valuable the stone.
The healing properties of amethyst are said to be the alleviating of stress and the improvement of blood circulation for better health. So use this stone when heading into those unavoidable stressful situations to get you back to a place of calm and relaxation!
